Romania’s Rewilded Forests Rank High in Nat Geo List

Why this is here: The Conservation Carpathia Foundation’s protection of 200,000 acres of old-growth woodland directly contributed to Romania’s high ranking on the list.
Romania’s Carpathian forests placed second in National Geographic’s ranking of top conservation destinations. The Conservation Carpathia Foundation led restoration work in the Făgăraș Mountains, earning the recognition. The Carpathians contain extensive virgin beech forests and support diverse wildlife like brown bears, wolves, and European bison.
The foundation protects approximately 200,000 acres of old-growth woodland. It is reintroducing European bison to their original habitat and converting illegally logged areas into biodiversity farms. National Geographic noted growing ecotourism in the region.
Conservation Carpathia stated the ranking confirms Romania’s rising profile as a nature and ecotourism destination. The foundation believes ecotourism fosters healthy local economies and long-term nature protection. Ecuador’s cloud forests topped the National Geographic list.
