Romania Celebrates Saint Ilie Day with Traditions Rooted in Faith

In Romania, people celebrated Saint Ilie Day on July 20, honoring the Old Testament prophet Elijah with religious observances and folk traditions. Saint Ilie, revered for his miracles and unwavering faith, is believed to control the weather, bringing both rain and storms. Romanians traditionally refrain from work on this day, fearing it may invite damaging weather to their crops.

Communities across Romania held patronal feasts, fairs, and processions, praying for good harvests and protection from extreme weather. People gathered medicinal herbs like basil, which priests blessed before being used for therapeutic purposes. Families also prepared alms for the departed and shepherds began returning to villages after the first half of the summer season.

More than 140,000 Romanians with names connected to Saint Ilie observed their name day. The day also holds significance for beekeepers, who traditionally harvest honey for the first time.
