Romania Opens Gymnastics Hall Honoring Nadia Comăneci’s Perfect 10

Romania inaugurated the new Nadia Comăneci Gymnastics Hall in Otopeni, near Bucharest, on Saturday, July 18, commemorating the 50th anniversary of Comăneci’s historic perfect 10 at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. The Țiriac Foundation built the facility to support future generations of Romanian gymnasts, and it meets international training standards for various gymnastics disciplines.

Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and numerous Romanian sports icons including Ion Țiriac and Gheorghe Hagi attended the opening ceremony, celebrating Comăneci’s legacy and the importance of athletic achievement. Bolojan emphasized the dedication and hard work required for success, highlighting Romanian athletes’ contributions to international competitions.

The government also approved a RON 122 million modernization project for the sports complex in Onești, Comăneci’s hometown, which will include a renovated gymnastics hall and facilities for other sports. Construction is slated to begin soon, with completion expected within two years, ensuring continued support for athletic development in the region.
