Why this is here: The Sibiu bypass, a segment of the A1 highway built between 2000 and 2010, proved essential in resolving traffic problems in the city, which sees over 20,000 vehicles daily.

Highway investments starting in the 2000s have accelerated the economic development of Sibiu, Romania. The city, with origins dating back eight centuries, was a key urban center in medieval Transylvania and served as the capital of Transylvania in the 18th century.

Modernization of roads linking Sibiu to areas like the Olt Valley began in the 19th century, bolstering its commercial role. In recent years, construction of the A1 highway and connecting roads to cities like Brașov and Bucharest has further solidified Sibiu’s position in transport, industry, and the economy.

By 2026, completion of the A1 section is expected to connect Sibiu to Romania’s western border via roughly 350 kilometers of highway. Future highway projects, including the Sibiu-Pitești and Sibiu-Făgăraș routes, aim to establish Sibiu as a major transportation hub for Romania.
