Ireland's Midwifery Standards Advance, But Fall Short, on Trans Inclusion

Researchers at University College Dublin, Ireland, analyzed the 2025 revision of the country’s midwifery education standards and found they represent progress in acknowledging transgender and gender diverse individuals as patients. The updated standards, the first comprehensive revision since 2012, take a step toward inclusive care.

However, the analysis reveals the standards still use gender-exclusive language and lack thorough integration of TGD perspectives into the curriculum. The commentary argues simply recognizing TGD people isn’t enough.

Without systemic change, inclusion risks becoming symbolic. The authors emphasize that midwifery education should prioritize self-determination, bodily autonomy, justice, and equity, principles from the International Confederation of Midwives that support trans inclusion.

The researchers call for consistent inclusive language, specific training in TGD health, and leadership development for midwives to champion equity. They also note the importance of creating supportive workplaces for trans and non-binary midwives themselves.
