Better Epidemiology Reporting Aims for Reliable Disease Stats

Researchers at several institutions developed the STROBE EPIC checklist to improve how studies report the prevalence and incidence of diseases. The existing STROBE guideline lacked specific criteria for these key epidemiological measurements.

The team used a modified Delphi process and expert consensus to create a 47-item checklist covering sections from the study title to other information. The checklist focuses on detailed reporting of study design, how researchers account for underreporting or misdiagnosis, and how they estimate the population affected.

It also addresses potential issues like incomplete surveillance and the limited generalizability of short-term studies. Experts piloted the checklist to ensure clarity and completeness. The creators hope STROBE EPIC will be used by a wide range of people, researchers, journal editors, and policymakers, to ensure epidemiological evidence is presented clearly and supports sound health decisions.
