Xi Jinping Pushes Open-Source AI, Challenges US Approach

Xi also stressed the need for global regulation of AI, including monitoring and early response systems, and criticized what he described as AI protectionism by the United States. Xi framed openness as a way to bridge the growing AI divide between nations and proposed offering 5,000 training opportunities to countries lacking advanced AI capabilities.

While China previously demonstrated reluctance to share, ordering Meta to unwind an AI startup acquisition, Xi signaled a shift toward greater international cooperation. The speech comes as China’s AI models, such as DeepSeek and Kimi K3, increasingly utilize open-source frameworks. The differing philosophies raise questions about the future of AI development and the balance between innovation, security, and equitable access.
