Tennessee Move Tests New Mom's Search for Community

A New York native relocated to rural Tennessee and struggled to find a supportive community after having a child. The author initially joined numerous mom groups, attending events like coffees, hikes, and playdates, but found it difficult to connect with others as most groups consisted of established families.

After discovering a small playgroup through a library flyer, she slowly began to build relationships with a group of other mothers. What began as awkward small talk among twelve moms and thirty children eventually blossomed into a close-knit group of six families meeting multiple times a week.

This community provided crucial support during a challenging time, following her husband’s disability and her mother’s death, and helped the author navigate new motherhood and feelings of isolation. The group even rallied during a recent ice storm, offering shelter and demonstrating the depth of their connection.
