Sacramento to Gain First-of-Its-Kind Public Market

Alchemist Community Development Corporation in Sacramento, California, is building Alchemist Public Market to address a lack of resources in a rapidly growing neighborhood. The nonprofit aims to transform a “food desert” into a vibrant community hub with a corner store accepting WIC and CalFresh benefits. The market will also house eight incubator restaurants and a shared kitchen for dozens of food vendors.

Nikki Gaddis-Chester of Jerk Street Tacos and Jessica Brown of Caribe Azul both credit Alchemist’s programs with aiding their business development. The market is planned as an all-electric, sustainably designed campus, intending to connect residents to local food and agriculture.

Construction began in April 2026, but Alchemist currently needs a bridge loan to navigate delayed funding and rising material costs. Despite these financial hurdles, the organization remains committed to completing the project and fostering economic growth in the area.
