Beirut University Replicates Digital Learning Hub

The American University of Beirut (AUB) independently expanded a philanthropically funded digital learning initiative to other departments. In early 2025, the Abdulla Al Ghurair Hub for Digital Teaching and Learning reached cumulative break-even, operating without ongoing funding from the Abdulla Al Ghurair Foundation (AGF). AGF intentionally designed the Hub as an institutional structure—integrating faculty, technology, and revenue—rather than a time-limited program.

The foundation distinguishes between “supportive capital,” which funds activities within existing systems, and “architectural capital,” which alters an institution’s operating logic. AUB’s decision to replicate the Hub model signals a shift in how the university approaches online education.

The AGF reports that standard philanthropic metrics focus on activity during funding periods, failing to assess long-term institutional change. Tracking post-grant behavior remains a challenge for the field, and a systematic assessment could reveal when architectural capital truly succeeds. The work to measure lasting institutional impact continues.
