Illinois Integrates Menopause Training Into Healthcare Bias Programs

Illinois Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton spearheaded a new law in Illinois that integrates menopause and perimenopause training into existing implicit bias awareness training for licensed healthcare professionals. Stratton initiated conversations with women across the state and discovered widespread concern over lack of adequate menopause care. The new law, passed unanimously, allows providers to fulfill continuing medical education requirements with specialized menopause training, without adding to their workload.

Illinois is the first state to adopt this approach, addressing a gap in care where 70% of women seeking treatment for menopause symptoms don’t receive it. The legislation aims to equip a broader range of physicians with knowledge about hormone therapy, non-hormonal options, and culturally sensitive care.

With ten states and Washington D.C. now addressing menopause through legislation, and Stratton poised to potentially win a U.S. Senate seat, this model could expand nationally, shifting the focus from a “personal issue” to a public health concern.
