Why this is here: The assessment included a new method for evaluating the impact of non-native mammals, utilizing the EICAT protocol to classify damage to Argentina’s biodiversity.

Argentine scientists updated the national IUCN Red List, evaluating 417 mammal species. The Argentine Society for the Study of Mammals (SAREM) assessed species over the past five years, reviewing scientific literature and field observations. This assessment included 22 more species than the 2019 evaluation, reflecting new discoveries and taxonomic revisions.

Researchers also used the EICAT protocol for the first time. EICAT measures the environmental damage caused by non-native species in Argentina. The country has 21 non-native mammal species, including the red deer and beaver.

The updated list will inform environmental impact assessments and future legislation. Argentina codified the conservation categories in 2021, allowing the list to serve as an official source for mammal protection policies.
