Humpback Whales Make Comeback Off Rio Coast

Humpback whales are increasingly sighted off the coast of Rio de Janeiro as the species recovers from near decimation by commercial whaling. The surge in sightings is also driving demand for whale-watching tours during the whales’ annual migration.

The humpback whale population has risen dramatically in recent decades. Approximately 40 years ago, only around 2,000 humpback whales remained.

Currently, the population numbers around 35,000. This rebound offers a positive sign for marine conservation efforts and suggests that protective measures can successfully restore endangered species. Continued monitoring will be crucial to ensure the long-term health of the humpback whale population and the sustainability of whale-watching activities.
