Nepal Establishes First National Park

Fifty years ago today, Nepal established Sagarmatha National Park, the country’s first National Park, encompassing 443 square miles and enshrining Mount Everest. The park borders the Qomolangma National Nature Preserve in Tibet and is part of the larger Sacred Himalayan Landscape. Designated a UNESCO Natural Heritage Site in 2002, Sagarmatha protects a rugged Himalayan terrain and a diverse range of species including snow leopards, Asiatic leopards, and over 200 bird species.

The park is also home to over 6,000 Sherpa people who have lived in the region for centuries, continuing their cultural traditions of respecting all life. The creation of Sagarmatha National Park represents a commitment to preserving both natural biodiversity and cultural heritage.

Protecting this area is increasingly important given the impacts of climate change on high-altitude ecosystems and the growing need for sustainable tourism. Future efforts will focus on balancing conservation with the needs of local communities.
