Belgian Farm Schools Cultivate Agroecological Farmers & Values

Researchers studied the Independent Peasant School network coordinated by Le Mouvement d’Action Paysanne (Le MAP) in Wallonia, Belgium to evaluate its effectiveness as a model for agroecological education. The network provides long-term, hands-on training rooted in peasant agroecological knowledge. Using field observations and a survey of 67 former students, researchers assessed learning experiences, professional outcomes, and the development of change agency.

The study found high learner satisfaction and strong engagement within the farm schools, with participants reporting personal growth and a commitment to agroecological values. Approximately one-third of alumni started their own agroecological farms, while many others incorporated these principles into their work and communities.

However, the research also noted challenges like a need for stronger theoretical foundations, difficulties balancing learning with labor demands, and ongoing obstacles to land and capital access. The findings suggest Le MAP’s farm schools offer a unique European model for transformative agroecology education that can support food system changes.
