South India Bamboo Crafts Face Resource and Support Challenges

Researchers studied bamboo handicrafts in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Goa to understand the ecological and cultural factors impacting the industry. The study found most artisans come from marginalized communities and lack access to credit, training, or stable markets. While bamboo offers economic potential and fosters community bonds, the sector in South India faces challenges including resource scarcity, limited technological advancement, and inadequate institutional support compared to the North-East.

The research highlights unsustainable harvesting practices and the increasing use of plastics as threats to both bamboo resources and traditional skills. National policies acknowledge bamboo’s potential, but benefits aren’t consistently reaching local producers.

Integrating conservation efforts with product innovation, skills development, and improved market access is crucial for ensuring the long-term viability of bamboo landscapes and the cultural heritage of the artisans who depend on them.
