Portuguese Parliament Approves Dental Career Path in National Health Service

The Portuguese Order of Dental Physicians (OMD) welcomed the unanimous parliamentary approval of a new career structure for dentists within the Serviço Nacional de Saúde (SNS), Portugal’s national health service. After decades without a defined professional framework within the SNS, dentists will now be integrated into local health units’ oral health services.

The approved legislation establishes three professional categories, assistant, advisor, and senior advisor, with varying levels of clinical and technical responsibility. It also outlines conditions for professional progression based on experience and specialization.

The OMD emphasized this isn’t merely symbolic recognition, but a genuine career structure designed to attract and retain dental professionals in the public system. The OMD also noted the law protects the rights of dentists already working within the SNS, including their seniority and accumulated service time. The organization will actively monitor the implementation of the new career path, hoping to see increased access to public oral healthcare throughout Portugal.
