Portuguese League Identifies TB Cases in Screening Program
Why this is here: The program screened individuals from vulnerable groups, resulting in 54 positive tuberculosis cases and demonstrating a proactive approach to public health intervention.
The Portuguese League Against AIDS identified 54 cases of tuberculosis in 2,511 screenings. The screenings took place over the last year in six municipalities within the Lisbon region. The program, “Health Closer TB,” focused on vulnerable populations.
These populations included migrants, people experiencing homelessness, substance users, and people living with HIV. Of those screened, 113 showed symptoms of tuberculosis. One hundred and three received referrals for specialized diagnosis.
The League provided close follow-up care to those referred. This included transportation to appointments, protective equipment, and psychological support. A woman diagnosed with active tuberculosis successfully completed treatment with the team’s support.
