Portugal Extends Free Public Transport to All Veterans

Portugal’s parliament approved a measure extending free public transportation to all former combatants throughout the country. Previously, access to free transport was limited to metropolitan and municipal passes, or trips up to 32 kilometers from a veteran’s residence. The change follows months of parliamentary debate and cross-party support from PSD, CDS, Chega, JPP, and the PS, despite initial concerns about the financial burden on the existing system.

The new law also extends the benefit to the surviving spouses of veterans. A key amendment establishes a compensation mechanism for transport companies based on actual pass usage, rather than simply the number issued, aiming to improve efficiency and reduce public spending.

The government must now implement the new funding model and coordinate with transport authorities to ensure nationwide access.
