Why this is here: The spray successfully removed a red-dyed oil stain from a white shirt with only water, performing as well as detergent in a comparative test.

Chinese researchers developed a spray that prevents dirt from adhering to clothing fibers. The spray creates an invisible polymer layer, acting as a barrier between fabric and soil. Testing showed the spray effectively repelled substances like oil, ketchup, and vinegar, requiring only water to rinse clean.

The research addressed the environmental impact of routine laundry. Researchers noted washing clothes converts potable water into wastewater containing detergent and microplastics. The spray reduced water, energy, and time consumption by approximately 82 percent in tests.

Researchers suggest applying the spray during clothing manufacture would be most effective. The spray also demonstrated antibacterial and antifungal properties, preventing odors and mold. It showed no harm to skin or the environment in testing.
