Brazil’s ‘Rain Prophets’ Combine Tradition & Tech for Water Security

In the semi-arid region of Piauí, Brazil, individuals known as “Rain Prophets” utilize traditional knowledge alongside modern techniques to locate water sources and promote sustainable agriculture. Francisco Vieira Sampaio, a water diviner, employs dowsing tools studied by the University of Munich to identify underground water, assisting communities in digging wells.

Simultaneously, the Mandacaru Formation Center supports the construction of cisterns, capable of holding up to 52,000 liters, to collect rainwater for families, schools, and livestock. These efforts are coupled with ecological farming practices like agroforestry, which mimic natural forests to enhance biodiversity and soil health.

Communities are also revitalizing seed banks, preserving native crop varieties and exchanging them with other farmers. The collaborative approach extends to economic initiatives such as community-supported fisheries and a weekly agroecological fair, providing income and access to healthy food. With a focus on resilience, these initiatives aim to keep young people rooted in the land and ensure food security in a changing climate.
