São Tomé Poet Conceição Deus Lima Dies

Conceição Deus Lima, a poet and journalist from São Tomé and Príncipe, died this Friday in São Tomé at age 64. Family sources reported she felt unwell in the morning and passed away at the Dr. Ayres de Menezes Central Hospital around 7:00 am local time.

Lima’s work has been translated into roughly eleven languages including German, Arabic, and English. She co-founded the National Union of Writers and Artists of São Tomé and Príncipe and served as the national coordinator for São Tomé and Príncipe with the World Poetry Movement starting in 2021.

Last year, the São Tomé government recognized her contributions to the country’s cultural identity by appointing her as a Cultural Ambassador. She encouraged leaders to prioritize the preservation of São Toméan culture for future generations.

Lima studied journalism in Portugal and earned degrees from King’s College London and the School of Oriental and African Studies. Her first book of poetry is titled “O Útero da Casa.” Further details regarding her final days and lasting impact remain forthcoming.
