Theater Group Highlights Iberian Wolf in Portugal

Why this is here: The number of Iberian wolf packs in Portugal decreased by 8% between 2002-2003 and 2019-2021, according to the national wolf census.

Peripécia Teatro will host “Lua cheia da terra” from May 26 to 30 in Benagouro, a village in Vila Real, Portugal. The event combines art, science, and community around the Iberian wolf. It began after the company created the play Loba, which examines the environmental, political, and social issues surrounding the wolf.

The five-day event features a return performance of Loba, documentaries, and discussions with wolf experts. Participants can also join guided walks to learn how to identify wolf signs in the territory. A resident tattoo artist will offer wolf-themed tattoos to attendees.

Recent data from 2019 to 2021 shows a concerning trend. The national wolf census revealed a 23% reduction in the wolf’s presence and an 8% decrease in the number of packs.

In the Alvão region, the number of packs has decreased by more than 50% since the last census. Peripécia Teatro intends for the event to foster dialogue between art and ecological awareness.
