Why this is here: The article demonstrates how independent journalism directly contributed to a legal victory – a federal conviction for land grabbing – protecting both a fragile coastal ecosystem and the rights of local fishing communities, a connection rarely highlighted in mainstream coverage.

A journalistic investigation by Mongabay helped halt a luxury resort development threatening a vital ecological sanctuary on the Piauí coast of Brazil. In March 2025, Mongabay reported on legislative maneuvers that downgraded the Itans Natural Monument – a 57-hectare area including mangroves, dunes, and shell mounds – to a less protected Environmental Protection Area, opening it up to economic activity. The report highlighted that this reclassification occurred without required environmental studies or public consultation.

Local fishermen described harassment, damage to boats, and arson following the arrival of developers interested in tourism projects, fearing displacement from their traditional way of life.

Following the publication, a federal court convicted the businessman behind the resort project of land grabbing, ordering him to vacate the area, restore damaged ecosystems, and pay fines. More recently, in January 2026, the state law that initially allowed the downgrading of the Itans Natural Monument was suspended, halting damaging activities and mandating state monitoring of the area.
