Brazilian Prize Supports Culture-Climate Projects

The Prêmio Espalha 2026 in Brazil will award R$10,000 to five initiatives that combine culture with solutions to social and environmental challenges. Created by C de Cultura and Outra Onda Conteúdo, the award seeks to map, recognize, and promote projects using culture to transform territories across Brazil.

The prize will focus on five categories: Indigenous Peoples, Quilombola Communities, Peripheries, Masters and Mistresses, and Popular Vote. A jury of cultural leaders, researchers, artists, and activists will select the winners. The initiative stems from a 2024 study investigating the connections between cultural and climate agendas, highlighting both the impact of climate change on culture and culture's potential as a tool for change.

The Prêmio Espalha also functions as a platform for networking and strengthening local responses to climate challenges. Organizers aim to contribute to public policy development and support sustainable ways of life. The first edition of the prize mapped 209 initiatives across 22 Brazilian states, and the results will be announced in August.
