Why this is here: The project reuses carbon dioxide captured from waste decomposition to support plant photosynthesis within the greenhouse, creating a closed-loop system.

A British landfill is now generating energy from waste to power a greenhouse and grow food. Located 90 miles from London, the landfill converts waste gases into electricity and heat. This powers a 30-foot-high greenhouse, equivalent in size to three tennis courts.

The greenhouse uses hydroponics and raised beds to grow crops. It currently produces up to 10 tons of food annually. The project aims to create a low-carbon agricultural center with year-round production.

Crapper and Sons Landfill Ltd. manages the initiative. They plan to collect and reuse plant waste after consumption.

A mobile app will facilitate direct delivery to consumers. The company anticipates expanding to 100 greenhouses within ten years. They estimate meeting 80% of local fruit and vegetable demand.
