CATL, a Chinese battery manufacturer, announced a breakthrough in sodium battery technology offering a potential alternative to lithium for electric vehicles. The company reduced production costs for the new cells to between $51 and $59 per kWh, bringing them close in price to traditional lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries.
These new sodium cells reach 175 Wh/kg and deliver a range of up to 400 km. CATL’s batteries maintain over 90% of their energy capacity even in extreme cold, performing similarly to, and sometimes better than, the first generation of BYD’s Blade batteries.
The development is important because it paves the way for cheaper electric vehicles globally and eliminates the price difference between sodium and LFP batteries.
