Polish Forager Uncovers WWII Aircraft Wreck

A resident of Świnoujście, Poland, discovered metal fragments while berry picking in a forest that experts believe are parts of an Allied aircraft from World War II. The man found the wreckage near Fort Gerhard, including aluminum fragments and burnt ammunition.

Museum staff identified the materials as likely belonging to an aircraft, noting the construction and the presence of .303 British ammunition, a caliber used in British Browning machine guns. A pipe with an identification number was also recovered, potentially linking to a Merlin engine.

Authorities have been notified, as the site may contain remains of the crew. The area around Świnoujście was frequently flown over by Allied planes during the war and was heavily defended, leading to numerous aircraft losses. Further investigation is planned to determine the aircraft’s identity and fully document the discovery.
