Poland Praised for Integrating Ukrainian Refugees

The German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) commended Poland and the Czech Republic for more effectively integrating Ukrainian refugees into their labor markets than Germany. FAZ reports Poland quickly established legal and digital solutions to facilitate employment for refugees, resulting in a higher percentage of employed Ukrainians.

The newspaper attributes Germany’s lower integration rates to administrative barriers and employer skepticism regarding refugee qualifications, not solely to social benefits. While acknowledging recent strains in Polish-Ukrainian relations and isolated incidents of violence against refugees in Poland, FAZ highlights that in the first half of last year, 68% of Ukrainian refugees in Poland and 66% in the Czech Republic were employed, compared to 39% in Germany.

FAZ suggests Germany can learn from Poland’s approach, particularly its rapid implementation of laws and digital tools. The article notes that tax contributions from Ukrainian refugees in Poland and the Czech Republic exceed state social welfare spending for this group.
