Soweto Farm Empowers Women, Honors Mandela’s Legacy

In Soweto, South Africa, Francis Marsh and two neighbors launched Ubuntu Farm to boost the local economy through agriculture. Marsh began the project on the grounds of her former high school, aiming to create jobs and provide agricultural education for young people.

The farm operates on the principles of Ubuntu, a philosophy championed by Nelson Mandela emphasizing community, sharing, and compassion. Ubuntu Farm specifically seeks to address economic disparities within Soweto, a township historically shaped by apartheid segregation policies.

The women cultivate crops and teach farming skills, hoping to foster self-sufficiency and a sense of collective purpose. They envision Ubuntu Farm as a model for sustainable development rooted in Mandela’s vision for a more equitable society.
