Rare Rusty Lark Rediscovered in Chad After Nearly a Century

French and Chadian ornithologists recently photographed the rusty lark in Chad’s wetlands, marking the first confirmed sighting of the bird in nearly a century. Pierre Defos du Rau and Julien Birard captured images of the Sahel native during a water bird survey.

The rusty lark has remained largely a mystery to scientists despite being known for over 100 years. Researchers currently lack understanding of the species’ life cycle, habitat preferences, or potential threats to its survival.

This rediscovery may provide a boost to conservation efforts in Chad. The country hopes the rare bird will attract funding for a game reserve that currently lacks the large mammals typically associated with African wildlife tourism. Further research will focus on understanding the rusty lark’s population and ecological needs.
