Liberia Converts Waste to Clean Energy
Why this is here: The project repurposes materials used to clean contaminated water into biomass briquettes, providing a clean fuel source and avoiding waste disposal.
In Liberia, Green Gold Liberia recently completed trainings converting waste into fuel and cleaning water. Andrew Macgona Sr. led a team of local technicians in the project, supported by the United Nations Development Programme. The initiative focuses on a circular economy approach, turning environmental waste into clean energy products.
The team developed a low-cost bioremediation process using carbonized biodegradable materials to remove heavy metals from wastewater. They then repurpose this material into biomass briquettes, offering an affordable alternative to charcoal and firewood. Participants also learned to build Eco stoves designed to reduce fuel consumption and harmful emissions, using locally sourced clay liners.
Alongside the technical skills, the project included training in financial governance and business planning. This aims to ensure the initiative develops into lasting green enterprises. While the Eco stoves and briquettes are ready for distribution, further assessment is needed to apply the bioremediation technology to industrial wastewater treatment.
