Uganda Initiative Aims to Reverse Forest Loss
Why this is here: The initiative specifically asks each household to plant three trees, framing conservation as an individual responsibility and direct action against accelerating forest loss.
Friends of Zoka launched the “Plant Three Trees per Household” initiative in Uganda’s Adjumani District to combat deforestation. The district is experiencing forest cover loss at twice the rate of replanting. Population growth and demand for wood fuel are major drivers of deforestation, straining local resources.
William Amanzuru Lesile of Friends of Zoka urged community members to restore forest cover. He stated planting trees protects livelihoods, biodiversity, and future generations. District officials also emphasized the need for community participation and sustainable forest use.
Adjumani District Forestry Officer Francis Ojja warned current deforestation rates are unsustainable. The district promotes agroforestry and community awareness programs.
Adjumani Town Clerk Patrick Keleture connected environmental protection to improved waste management. The initiative seeks to mobilize communities in Pachara Sub-county and beyond.
