Nuits D’afrique Festival Celebrates 40 Years in Montreal

Lamine Touré and Suzanne Rousseau hosted the 40th annual Nuits d’Afrique International Festival in Montreal, Canada from July 7 to 19, drawing thousands of attendees and performers. Touré, originally from Ivory Coast, and Rousseau founded the festival to showcase African cultures and provide a space for cultural reconnection for diaspora communities.

The festival began as an extension of the Balattou club, aiming to represent rhythms and cultures from across Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America. Organizers specifically wanted to create an event where children born outside of their ancestral countries could experience and connect with their heritage.

This year’s festival featured both international stars like Oumou Sangaré and Tiken Jah Fakoly, as well as local Montreal-based artists such as the Sissokho brothers from Senegal. The festival’s diverse lineup reflects the history of migration and cultural exchange that shaped the musical traditions on display.
