Rare Gorilla Twins Born in DR Congo’s Virunga Park

Why this is here: The extremely rare birth of twin male gorillas offers a boost to a vulnerable population estimated at just over 1,000 individuals worldwide.
Endangered mountain gorillas welcomed a set of twin males in Virunga National Park. Park official Methode Uhoze confirmed the birth on Thursday. Scientists report fewer than one percent of mountain gorilla pregnancies result in twins.
This marks the second recorded instance of twin gorillas born in the park, with the previous case occurring in 2020. Trackers spotted the newborns on Saturday and are providing increased monitoring and protection.
Virunga National Park, established in 1925, spans 7,800 square kilometers near the borders of Rwanda and Uganda. The park currently houses an estimated 350 great apes and experienced eight other gorilla births in 2025. The reserve operates amidst ongoing regional conflicts and militia activity.
