Green Party Pledges Polyfest Funding
Why this is here: The Polyfest Trust reported running at a deficit in recent years, and last year broke even on a $2 million event, making the Green Party’s funding guarantee a particularly welcome announcement.
The New Zealand Green Party promised to cover any funding gaps for ASB Polyfest if elected. Co-leaders Marama Davidson, Teanau Tuiono, and Huhana Lyndon made the announcement at the festival in Auckland on Thursday.
Polyfest director Seiuli Terri Leo-Mauu recently stated securing long-term funding remains a challenge. The Greens committed to providing the roughly $3 million needed annually to ensure the event’s continuation.
Organisers report private sponsors and tertiary institutions have faced budget cuts, creating deficits for the festival. Steven Hargreaves of the Polyfest Trust welcomed the Green Party’s pledge, stating a guaranteed funding safety net provides relief. This year’s festival, celebrating its 51st year, anticipates over 75,000 attendees.
