Egypt and Turkey Seek Expanded Environmental Collaboration Before COP31

Egypt’s Minister of Local Development and Environment Manal Awad met with Turkish Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum in Turkey to discuss strengthening environmental cooperation. The July 16 to 17 meeting occurred during the D-8 Ministerial Meeting on Environment as both countries prepare for the 31st UN Climate Change Conference (COP31).

The ministers agreed to revisit a previous memorandum of understanding and explore joint projects in areas like waste management, climate change mitigation, and biodiversity protection. Egypt’s Climate and Environment Investment Unit offered potential investment opportunities in sustainable development sectors.

Awad shared Egypt’s experience hosting COP27, hoping Turkey will build upon its success at COP31. Kurum responded by announcing plans to visit Egypt to learn from its COP27 experience and deepen bilateral environmental collaboration.
