New Zealand Analyst Proposes Plan for Energy Independence & Growth

Pattrick Smellie, a New Zealand political economist, proposes a comprehensive plan to address the country’s energy vulnerability, climate change concerns, and economic stagnation. The “Smellie Plan” advocates for a rapid decarbonisation strategy, prioritizing the development of supercritical geothermal energy and embracing new digital technologies.

Smellie argues that framing the initiative around energy security, rather than solely climate change, will appeal to a broader range of New Zealanders and foster cross-party support. The plan, informed by a Sustainable Business Council report, estimates potential economic activity of $22 billion annually to 2035, potentially doubling New Zealand’s GDP within a decade.

Smellie believes a focus on utilizing indigenous energy resources can create a future where New Zealanders choose to stay, and highlights that electrifying the economy to 70-75% is achievable with significant investment. He suggests politicians present the plan not as a “vision” but as a compelling “story” of a secure, independent, and growing New Zealand.
