Hutt Valley Support Service Closes

Birthright Hutt Valley in New Zealand is ceasing operations after six decades of service. The organization supports single-caregiver families in the Hutt Valley region and represents the area’s only specialist social service of its kind.

Public Service Association national secretary Fleur Fitzsimons attributes the closure to inadequate government funding. She states Oranga Tamariki offered no plan or replacement for the services Birthright provided. Birthright Hutt Valley manager Sarah Szabo notes families are now unsure where to turn for assistance.

The service assisted families with navigating social welfare, family court, and family violence situations. They also operated a Whānau Room providing practical support. While Birthright helped many over the years, the long-term impact of its absence on the community remains unclear.
