Mexico City Honors Victims of Last Year’s Double Homicide

In Mexico City, family and friends commemorated Ximena Guzmán and José “Pepe” Muñoz one year after their deaths. They gathered near the Napoleon Street bridge and Calzada de Tlalpan in the Moderna colonia, Benito Juárez. Attendees placed flowers, candles, and photos at the site of the May 20, 2023 shooting.

The two were close collaborators of City Head Clara Brugada. Samuel, Ximena’s brother, expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of the investigation despite 18 arrests linked to a criminal group operating in Mexico City and the State of Mexico.

Brugada attended the memorial, listening to messages from loved ones. She later shared a statement on social media, vowing the case would not go unpunished and describing the pair as dedicated public servants. A public vigil is planned for Wednesday evening at the Zócalo.
