Mexican Congress to Review 60 Proposals to Strengthen Femicide Legislation

The Mexican Chamber of Deputies will review 60 initiatives aimed at strengthening laws concerning femicide. Kenia López Rabadán, President of the Chamber’s Directing Council, announced the review following proposals for a single penal code for femicide submitted by President Claudia Sheinbaum. These initiatives include reforms to the Penal Code, the National Code of Criminal Procedures, and the General Law on Access to a Violence-Free Life for Women.

López Rabadán emphasized the importance of carefully considering these proposals from various political parties to enrich the new general law. She stated the Congress intends to prevent the application of leniency criteria, amnesties, or conditional release in femicide cases to combat impunity.

The Chamber plans to incorporate input from victims, families, civil organizations, experts, and prosecutors. The goal is to create a comprehensive law that prevents violence, standardizes investigations and sentencing, protects victims, ensures comprehensive redress, and reduces impunity.
