Jalisco Water Plan Aims to Fix Turbid Water in Guadalajara

The National Water Commission (CONAGUA) is reviewing Jalisco’s state water plan, a strategy designed to address water shortages, leaks, and the issue of murky water reaching homes in the Guadalajara metropolitan area. The Plan Hídrico de Jalisco includes 32 actions for Guadalajara and the rest of the state, with an initial budget of 100 million pesos focused on emergency measures like water distribution and temporary purification plants.

Currently, a program provides free potable water to over 200 affected neighborhoods via tanker trucks and water vouchers. The plan envisions completing immediate emergency work by year’s end, with visible improvements to water quality expected by September.

Longer-term, the 42 billion peso plan includes modernizing water treatment plants, repairing underground collectors, and building new infrastructure. CONAGUA is also working to rehabilitate the El Zapotillo dam and is addressing issues within the Lerma-Santiago basin, including desilting the Lerma River and improving wastewater treatment plants across four states.
