Mexico State Recycles Paper to Fund Free Textbooks

The government of Mexico State delivered 155 tons of used paper and cardboard to the National Commission of Free Textbooks (Conaliteg) in Mexico, where it will be recycled into educational materials. The initiative, called “Recycle to Read”, repurposes paper from authorized document disposal within state dependencies and organizations. Officials state this aligns with a responsible public administration focused on efficient and sustainable resource use.

The recycled material is expected to conserve 7.75 million liters of water, protect 2,325 trees, and save over 1.178 million kilowatt-hours of energy. Conaliteg noted that paper constitutes the primary raw material for free textbooks, making this recovery crucial for both education and environmental reduction.

This strategy began with an agreement published on July 1st, authorizing the donation of paper and cardboard for recycling. Several state institutions participated including the State Finance Secretariat and the State of Mexico Integrated Educational Services.
