Mexico Adds Drug for Dwarfism to National Health List

Mexico’s health authorities recently added vosoritida to the National Compendium of Health Supplies, a move expected to improve the lives of children with achondroplasia, a form of dwarfism. For decades, treatment focused on managing the complications of the condition, multiple surgeries and ongoing medical care.

Vosoritida is the first therapy that addresses the molecular cause of achondroplasia, promoting better linear growth and proportionality. Early diagnosis and treatment are critical for maximizing the drug’s benefits, according to Dr.

Juana Inés Navarrete Martínez of UNAM’s Faculty of Medicine. The inclusion in the Compendium is a necessary step for institutions like IMSS and ISSSTE to begin acquiring and distributing the treatment.

Parents, specialists, and patient organizations collectively advocated for access to this therapy, demonstrating that medical innovation is most valuable when it improves patients’ daily lives and allows greater independence. The next challenge is ensuring timely access to the treatment for all children who need it, regardless of location or economic status.
