Mexico Cancels Development Project on Nayarit Beach

Mexico’s Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) revoked a concession granted to Cantiles de Mita S.A. de C.V. for a project on Playa Las Cocinas in Punta de Mita, Nayarit. The decision followed a review revealing the company constructed works and installations without federal authorization, violating the terms of its concession. Semarnat will now redesign the project to prioritize environmental restoration, including vegetation recovery and erosion control using natural solutions.

The agency coordinated with the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection, the Attorney General’s Office, and various directorates to reach this decision, also engaging in dialogue with local communities.

Semarnat stated that the new plan will focus on ecological restoration over further development, ensuring public access to the beach and protecting coastal ecosystems. The government views protecting coastal ecosystems, environmental justice, and public beach access as priorities.
