Luxembourg Residents Reduce Household Waste by 70kg in Decade

Why this is here: The study analyzed 15.6 tonnes of municipal household waste from 15 communes to create a representative sample of the entire country's waste production.
Luxembourg residents produced an average of 154 kilograms of mixed household waste per year in 2024-2025. This figure represents a 9 kilogram decrease from the 2021-2022 study. Over the past ten years, residents have reduced their household waste by a total of 70 kilograms, down from 223.2 kg in 2013-2014.
The reduction is attributed to increased public awareness and improved municipal waste management. More communes now offer separate bins for organic waste and easier access to resource centers. The “polluter pays” principle, where residents pay for black bin disposal by weight, also reduced mixed waste by 27 kg per person annually.
However, 37% of the weight in non-recycling bins consists of organic waste, including avoidable food waste. Authorities encourage greater use of organic waste bins for composting and biogas production. Paper and cardboard in residual waste increased by 48% despite previous reductions.
