South Korea’s Sokcho City to Distribute Funds to All Residents

Sokcho City in Gangwon Province, South Korea, will distribute 200,000 won (approximately $150 USD) to every registered resident, regardless of income. The initiative, a key campaign promise of Mayor Lee Byeong-seon, aims to alleviate the burden of rising living costs and stimulate the local economy. Applications begin on July 20 and will be accepted for two months.

The program sets Sokcho apart from other local governments that often implement income-based eligibility requirements for similar support programs. Both Korean citizens and foreign residents with permanent residency or who reside in Sokcho are eligible.

Residents can receive the funds through a local gift card application or a prepaid card. The city has also implemented a phased application system based on birth year digits to manage initial demand, though online applications are open to all without restriction. The funds must be spent at eligible businesses within Sokcho City before November 30.
