Italy Starts Work on Largest Agrivoltaic Plant

European Energy began construction in Vizzini, Sicily, on a 225.5 MW agrivoltaic plant—the largest in Italy. The company plans to integrate renewable energy production with agriculture, including sheep grazing and reforestation efforts. The plant is expected to generate roughly 405 GWh annually, enough to power over 135,000 homes.

European Energy secured long-term revenue visibility through Italy’s FER X Contract for Difference auction system. Alessandro Migliorini of European Energy emphasized close collaboration with local stakeholders during the design and contracting phases. The company selected agrivoltaic technologies suited to the area’s agricultural conditions and involved local businesses in construction.

However, similar projects in Sardinia—home to Italy’s largest sheep farming concentration—face strong opposition from regional committees and politicians. European Energy previously completed the Troia solar park in Puglia, which was Italy’s largest single-connection photovoltaic plant in 2020. Development continues as the company seeks to expand its renewable energy portfolio in Southern Europe.
