Octopus Energy Launches Smart Charging Solution

Octopus Energy extended its Intelligent Octopus program, automatically optimizing electric vehicle charging times to reduce costs. The system leverages fluctuating energy prices—reaching 238% swings on March 20—by prioritizing charging during periods of lower demand and renewable energy production. This flexibility offers customers a 30% discount on each kilowatt-hour of optimized energy.

Octopus, with over one million Italian customers and ten million globally, advocates for a fundamental overhaul of the European energy system. The company believes current fixed tariffs distort the market and hinder the transition to renewable sources.

Giorgio Tomassetti of Octopus emphasizes the need to increase renewable energy coverage to at least 70% in Europe, currently below 50%, and highlights the potential of vehicle-to-grid technology. He also criticizes pricing disparities between home and public charging stations, calling for flexible tariffs to encourage smart charging habits.
