Italy’s Largest Agrivoltaic Plant Powers Up Near Mount Etna

Geostudiogroup completed construction of “Big Fish. Sardella”, Italy’s largest agrivoltaic system, in the Catania plain near Mount Etna in Sicily.

The approximately 500-hectare plant has a total installed capacity of 273 MW and spans multiple municipalities. The agrivoltaic system allows for continued agricultural activity, including growing oranges, mangoes, and avocados, while also generating renewable energy and potentially mitigating climate change effects like heat waves.

The company is also involved in infrastructure projects including a planned highway across Libya and a 330 MW hydroelectric plant in Gabon intended to provide electricity access to local communities. Geostudiogroup, founded by Franco Privitera Garozzo and Salvatore Camillieri, has expanded from telecommunications into renewable energy projects across Italy and internationally. The plant’s two components, Big Fish (227 MWp) and Sardella (46 MWp), will produce a combined 535,000 MWh annually.
